Start at the Beginning

People often ask me how I began writing. Where I got the idea for this poem or that article. They say they have so many ideas for so many genres; they worry that that variety will count against them.  Ultimately, they are, I know, looking for the key to unlock their own writing.

The answer, truly, is to start at the beginning. Just write…and take it, as writing guru Anne Lamott would say, “bird by bird”.

High Wire Act

it is unnatural
we landed creatures
wedded to humus and rock
think ourselves suited
to the sky’s height

it is natural
we begin flat-footed
our days to known end
nothing new under
the sun which rules us

it is natural too
we etch into rock
we raise voice   so many
yowls and yawps
our marks on the universe
