Tired

“People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn’t true. I was not tired physically … No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” – Rosa Parks

Tired

They tell that story:
Rosa Parks
and her tired feet

how she wouldn’t give
to a white man
her seat on the bus

how it began
the fight for civil rights
but that began decades earlier

with other strong souls
in other cities
before that bus ride.

Of course, that’s just
people telling tales
but we all know

how the soul balks
at one thing more piled
on a mass of others

bearing the body down.
A final droplet added
to a glass already full

and right now
my feet are tired.
