In the midst of joy, sadness.
Her voice wavered, a dip
after a cheery greeting.
Conversation wavered too
a derailment into death.
There in the middle of day
bright with sun, was sadness.
We stood caught in transit: me
arriving, she a step from leaving.
Our words heavy with what we cannot
let go and that which will not let us.
